Active Listener Program

Gateway Festival Orchestra’s first board president, Lily Kaufman, loved great music and kids. In her honor, GFO’s “Developing the Active Listener” program is presented by music educators who are members of the orchestra. This free youth program goes into camps, schools, and day care centers to bring the magic of live classical music to children in the St. Louis area. Presentations such as these are a proven way to encourage active listenership. Gateway continues to seek funding for these vital links to the music future of St. Louis. The images below were taken at the Transition Preschool.

Young Artists Program

Music Teachers

Do you have a student that you believe should be considered as a GFO Young Artist? Please contact Deberah Haferkamp at

Every summer young musicians are given the opportunity to perform as soloists during concerts with our professional community orchestra. William Schatzkamer, one of the founders of the orchestra and its first conductor and music director, established this tradition which continues to this day. Through it the GFO has introduced many talented young players to the music profession. To acknowledge Maestro Schatzkamer’s vision, the GFO Board established the William Schatzkamer Young Artist Fund to support future Young Artists.
